Legal
Terms of use.
Last updated 29 October 2026. Written to be read, by humans.
These terms explain the rules for using uBurn: the iPhone and Android apps, the web app at app.uburn.org and this website (together, the Service). They form an agreement between you and:
uBurn asbl / vzw, a Belgian non-profit association, company number BE1007.466.249, registered office at Avenue Marie-José 52, 1200 Brussels, Belgium. Email: info@uburn.org.
We wrote them to be clear. By creating an account or using the Service, you accept these terms and acknowledge our Privacy policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. What uBurn does
uBurn turns physical activity into micro-donations for climate and environmental non-profits (the Organisations). As a Burner, you record your active calories by connecting a supported tracker (such as Strava or Garmin) or by adding activities manually. As a Sponsor, you pledge an amount per 100 active calories burned by one or more Burners, with a monthly cap you choose. You can be both.
uBurn is a platform operated by a non-profit. We are not an Organisation's agent, and each Organisation remains responsible for its own projects.
2. Your account
- You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. If you are under 18, you confirm that a parent or legal guardian agrees to your use of the Service, and sponsoring others requires their payment consent.
- The information you give us must be accurate and kept up to date. Keep your login details private. You are responsible for activity on your account.
- One person, one account. Accounts cannot be sold or transferred.
3. How donations work
- Counting. At the end of each calendar month, the active calories of each Burner are counted and the amount owed by each Sponsor, for each Organisation, is calculated, never above the Sponsor's monthly cap.
- Payment. Sponsors are charged once a month through our payment provider, Stripe, by card or SEPA direct debit. uBurn never stores your full card details.
- Transfer. The money is collected on uBurn's bank account and transferred to the chosen Organisations. Transfers may be grouped over several months, in particular to limit bank costs while amounts are small. Every transfer is published on our transparency page with its bank statement.
- Choice of Organisations. You choose your Organisations in the app and can change them at any time. Changes apply from the next monthly calculation. uBurn itself can be chosen as a recipient.
- Costs and platform contribution. Any payment processing cost or uBurn platform contribution deducted from donations will be shown clearly in the app before it applies to you.
- Cancelling. Sponsors can stop or change a pledge at any time in the app. Amounts already calculated for a completed month remain due.
- Refunds. Donations are voluntary gifts and are, in principle, not refundable once transferred to an Organisation. If you believe you were charged by mistake, contact us within 60 days and we will investigate and correct any error.
4. Welcome sponsorship
To get you started, uBurn sponsors new Burners for their first 6 months at €0.10 per 100 active calories, up to €1 per month. This sponsorship is funded by uBurn, is personal and has no cash value. We may change or end this offer for new accounts at any time. It continues for accounts that already benefit from it until the end of their 6 months, unless the account is closed or these terms are breached.
5. Plans for organisations
Companies, brands, clubs and schools can sponsor their people through sponsorship codes and paid plans. Those plans are governed by a separate order form or agreement, which prevails over these terms in case of conflict. Unless agreed otherwise, plan prices are yearly, exclude VAT and donations, and can be cancelled at any time with effect at the end of the current period.
6. Fair play
uBurn works on trust. Recording activities you did not do, manipulating data or creating fake accounts harms your Sponsors and the Organisations. We may correct suspicious data, exclude activities, or suspend or close an account involved in abuse, after giving you the chance to explain, unless urgent action is needed.
7. Your content
You may share achievements, photos and messages through the Service or on social networks (Your Content). You keep all rights in Your Content. You grant uBurn a free, non-exclusive, worldwide licence to display Your Content within the Service for as long as it is online, and to use it in our communication only with your separate consent. You must have the rights to what you share, and it must not be unlawful, offensive, misleading or infringe anyone's rights. We may remove content that breaks these rules.
8. Intellectual property
The Service, its software, design, texts and the uBurn name and logo belong to uBurn or its licensors. Organisations and sponsors keep the rights in their own names, logos and materials. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Service for its intended, non-commercial purpose. You may not copy, scrape, resell, reverse engineer or misuse the Service, except where the law allows it.
9. Health and safety
uBurn encourages physical activity but does not give medical advice. Calorie figures come from your tracker or your input and are estimates. Exercise within your limits and consult a health professional if in doubt.
10. Availability and changes to the Service
We work hard to keep uBurn available and reliable, but we cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. We may improve, change or discontinue features. If we stop the Service entirely, we will give reasonable notice and settle all pending donations.
11. Liability
uBurn is liable for damage caused by its fraud, gross negligence or wilful misconduct, and for death or personal injury caused by its fault. In other cases, and to the extent permitted by law, our liability is limited to foreseeable direct damage and to the amounts you paid through the Service in the 12 months before the event. We are not responsible for the services of third parties, such as trackers, payment providers or the Organisations' own activities. Nothing in these terms limits the rights you have as a consumer under mandatory law.
12. Closing your account
You can delete your account at any time from the app settings. We may suspend or close an account in case of a serious breach of these terms, as described in section 6. Pending amounts for completed months remain due and will be transferred to the Organisations.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when we add features or when the law changes. We will notify you of important changes in the app or by email at least 30 days before they apply. If you do not agree, you can close your account before the changes take effect.
14. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by Belgian law. Please contact us first: most issues are solved quickly. As a consumer, you can also turn to the Belgian Consumer Mediation Service (mediationconsommateur.be). Disputes fall under the courts of Brussels, without prejudice to your right as a consumer to bring proceedings before the courts of your place of residence and to rely on the mandatory protections of your country.
